What is BESS?
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are essential infrastructure for a clean, reliable energy system. Utility-scale batteries are large, grid-connected storage facilities that absorb electricity when supply is high – such as on windy or sunny days – and release it when demand rises or generation falls. Reacting within milliseconds, they balance supply and demand in real time: keeping the grid stable, allowing more renewable energy onto the system, and reducing the need for fossil-fuel backup. Batteries can react within milliseconds to keep the grid’s frequency steady, smoothing the constant mismatches between supply and demand that would otherwise risk blackouts. Less volatility in the market results in more steady prices for consumers.
Renewable Integration
When wind and solar produce more power than the grid can use, that clean energy is often wasted. Batteries capture the surplus and release it later, reducing waste and curtailment of renewable generation.
Easing grid congestion
By storing electricity close to where it’s needed, batteries take strain off overloaded power lines and help the system operator manage power loads more efficiently.
