BESS plays a key role in a sustainable energy system.

What is BESS?

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are essential infrastructure for a clean, reliable energy system. Utility-scale batteries are large, grid-connected storage facilities that absorb electricity when supply is high – such as on windy or sunny days – and release it when demand rises or generation falls. Reacting within milliseconds, they balance supply and demand in real time: keeping the grid stable, allowing more renewable energy onto the system, and reducing the need for fossil-fuel backup. Electric Land develops, builds and invests in grid-scale battery storage projects, from greenfield site through to operation.

As more wind and solar come onto the grid, the need for flexible storage is growing quickly. Battery storage is now central to keeping the system stable, secure and affordable as the UK moves towards net zero.

As renewable generation from wind and solar continues to grow, the energy system requires flexibility to balance supply and demand in real time.

Powering a Flexible Energy System.

Why Battery Storage Matters:

Grid stability

Batteries can react within milliseconds to keep the grid’s frequency steady, smoothing the constant mismatches between supply and demand that would otherwise risk blackouts. Less volatility in the market results in more steady prices for consumers.

Renewable Integration

When wind and solar produce more power than the grid can use, that clean energy is often wasted. Batteries capture the surplus and release it later, reducing waste and curtailment of renewable generation.

Easing grid congestion

By storing electricity close to where it’s needed, batteries take strain off overloaded power lines and help the system operator manage power loads more efficiently.

System Flexibility

Batteries provide fast, dependable reserve power that steps in when generation drops unexpectedly, strengthening security of supply and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel plants. A flexible energy system can respond quicker and cheaper to unexpected changes in generation and demand without impacting the transition to net zero.

Delivering battery storage

Electric Land develops, builds and invests in grid-scale battery storage projects across the UK and Europe – from securing the right site and grid connection, through planning, construction and energisation, to long-term operation. We carry each project across its full lifecycle and stay invested for the long term.

If you own land that could host a battery storage project, we’d like to hear from you. We partner with landowners at zero cost to them, taking on all development activity, due diligence and risk, while you continue using the site and receive payment throughout.
